Innovative detection of drug-impaired drivers

20% of fatal traffic accidents in Sweden are caused by intoxicated drivers. Swedish police currently use a ‘pen test’ and instinct to gauge whether a driver is intoxicated. They then must transport suspects to a hospital or police station to administer a urine or blood test, the results of which may take weeks to arrive. substance:ID uses LC-MS technology to detect drivers’ drug use. This is a much more immediate and less intrusive method than current urine and blood tests. The designers worked with Umeå Traffic Police to create a cohesive physical and digital design for the device.

JURY STATEMENT

With clear purpose and well-executed design, this new detector helps police identify drug-impaired drivers reliably and quickly. The intensive R&D that went into this project was impressive and takes the functionality and usability to a professional level.

WINNER STATEMENT

It was challenging and exciting to tackle this important topic together, so we are very grateful to receive this prestigious design award.
