App Design for Women's Safety
Harassment and abuse of women in public spaces is an everyday occurrence throughout the world. SAFHER is an app designed to increase women’s safety in public spaces. It uses a combination of Google Maps and user data to identify which routes are safest for women and conveys this to the user using a visual color scale. Users can drop pins in areas where they experienced gender-based harassment, abuse or microaggression. They can also open a discussion thread about their experience. This allows local women to leave warnings for others, making SAFHER a platform to educate, empower and encourage.
The app concept is exciting, but there are questions to consider, such as ensuring the accuracy of reports and validating user identity. Besides this, the app takes a novel and innovative approach to women's safety!
WINNER STATEMENTWinning an iF DESIGN STUDENT AWARD for Safher gives me the opportunity to share my passion for gender equality and the issues women face in their everyday lives. Thank you to the IF team and judges.
