FIX Project - Stop the release of microplastics

New Materials

The European Environment Agency estimates that over 14 million tonnes of microplastics have entered the world’s oceans, wreaking permanent damage on marine ecosystems. Up to a third of this pollution originates in synthetic textiles, which release fibers during washing. FIX tackles this problem by collecting and upcycling this waste into a new material, preventing it from entering the water cycle. This new material is then mixed with polypropylene to produce 3D printing filament which can be used to manufacture an array of new products. FIX takes a circular approach to waste, not only avoiding pollution but creating new value.

JURY STATEMENT

This design solution creates recyclable products from microplastics that occur in domestic and industrial washing processes. This is a practical and highly feasible concept that is likely to blaze a trail in the circular economy.
