Locui, Visual Communication for Non-Speaking Teens
AAC-based Visual Communication Toolkit
Locui is an AAC system designed for autistic pre-teens and early teens who have speech challenges. It bridges the gap between childish picture cards and clinical tools, acting as a friendly companion rather than a cold device. With a color-coded communication board featuring 100+ icons and monochromatic emotional cards, it minimizes sensory overload while facilitating daily communication and emotional expression. Customizable elements cater to each user, making it a valuable resource that addresses an underserved age group with a warm, respectful visual language.
This design for an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tool is specifically targeted to teens and pre-teens. It elegantly combines elements of childlike and adult communication, appropriate to its target group. Very well conceived!
WINNER STATEMENTIt is a profound honor to receive the iF DESIGN STUDENT AWARD. Locui was born from the belief that communication belongs to everyone, and this recognition reminds me that design can truly make a difference in people's lives. I am deeply grateful to everyone who supported and believed in this project.
