Green Production Solution
In industrial production, lampshades are typically made from materials like plastic or paper pulp, which entail significant energy use and pollution. The Grown Boundary project uses an innovative method that eliminates the need for traditional sewing techniques, such as cutting, pressing, or the use of chemicals, streamlining the lampshade assembly process. By integrating nature into production, this concept challenges our fundamental understanding of what it means to produce.
This project reimagines lampshade production through a unique collaboration with silkworms. Using a “planar cocoon” method, silk is spun directly onto a form, eliminating the usual stages of cutting, pressing and chemical processing. This is a wonderfully poetic and resource-conscious approach to manufacturing.
WINNER STATEMENTI am truly honored that my work has received the iF DESIGN STUDENT AWARD. Building on this, I will continue to question fully industrialized production, explore how living organisms can join sustainable making, and shape new relationships between nature, design, and the future.
