Malaria is an infectious disease that affects 300 to 500 million patients each year and kills more than 2 million people annually. According to estimates by the World Health Organization, more than 90 percent of malaria cases worldwide occur in sub-Saharan African countries. Although measures are being taken towards treatment and insecticides, there are difficulties due to the emergence of insecticide-resistant mosquitoes and treatment-resistant strains.
