Safety Device for Electrical Workers
In 2022 there were 185 fatalities among technicians working on India’s electrical power lines, most caused by substandard working conditions and outdated equipment. Addressing this problem, the Kaapan smart pliers incorporate a non-contact voltage detector into an essential tool, thus making hazard detection an integral part of the technician’s routine and potentially saving lives. The detector is seamlessly integrated into cutting pliers without disrupting the tool’s functionality.

Because it is a low-cost solution, this concept has great potential to be quickly and easily popularized. This is a good example of how great design often involves adaptation rather than reinvention.
