Membran - City Networking
Intervention for Sustainable Cities
"Membran" is an intervention with nets in the public space. It creates places for encounters and play. Together, we turn damaged tarpaulins into sturdy ropes and knot nets. Everyone is invited to participate, engage in conversation, and thus co-create the city. The nets are made on-site in the city and installed in a way that activates unused space. Our goal is to collectively reflect on the city and question the familiar. We want to give an opportunity to create a future city how we as a community imagine it in a sustainable way.
Membran combines sustainability with community, turning recycled tarps into public amenities for rest and interaction. This concept contributes to changing urban perceptions and promoting the innovative use of space in more socially sustainable cities.
WINNER STATEMENTWhen we got the message that we won an iF DESIGN STUDENT AWARD, we couldn’t believe our eyes. It's incredible that what began with collecting waste from construction sites in Vienna and twisting kilometers of rope has turned into an award-winning design project.
