Waste worker Mental Health Pilot Program

Compliance plays a key role in defining SZW's holistic interventions. In the recent past, we have identified a gap - as we encountered several waste workers who need urgent mental health support. They associate mental illness with supernatural forces and are often shunned from the public eye, leaving their families in unsafe situations. As a solution, SZW will create an inclusive compliance model that includes mental health indicators. To this end, SZW will conduct a pilot to shed light on the prevalence of mental illness in these vulnerable communities.

JURY STATEMENT

This project aims to improve the quality of life and mental well-being of waste workers, who face arduous and often hazardous working conditions. It also seeks to raise awareness of the far-reaching social responsibility of the public in carelessly discarding waste.

WINNER STATEMENT

We are thrilled to win the iF SOCIAL IMPACT PRIZE for our mental health pilot for waste workers! With expert partners, we’ll assess mental illness prevalence, raise awareness, and provide therapy. This milestone helps SZW integrate mental health into compliance, tackling the vulnerabilities that trap waste workers in exploitative conditions.
