NATURE-BASED ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND CONSERVATION OF THE MAKALU-BARUN NATIONAL PARK AND BUFFER ZONE

The Makalu-Barun region is located in Sankhuwabha district eastern Nepal and is renowned for its ecological, biodiversity, cultural, and scenic treasures. It is also one of the wildest corners of Nepal, with unprecedented potential for the development of adventure and eco-tourism. The region was badly affected by, the decade-long Maoist insurgency that began in 1996 that took a significant toll upon all the Makalu Barun region’s activities, as well as upon the development aspirations of local communities (Zharkevich 2019). Additionally, reduced on-farm and other economic opportunities, combined with a rising cost of living.
