Evaluation of Actinomycete species from waste dumpsites for production of broadspectrum antibiotics

Actinomycetes is one of the microbial species known to produce wide range of antibiotics. Given the recent increase in the surge of multidrug resistant pathogens against conventionally used antibiotics, there is need to search for potential source of novel broadspectrum antibiotics among the soil living actinomycetes. The waste dumpsites became a choice location given that most domestic and industrial waste as well as medical waste finds their way to such place. Hence, any actinomycete able to dominate such a competitive environment must possess innate ability to protect itself against invading species by producing antibiotic
