Behind the façade: mastering technological and collaborative symbiosis
The design of a building is a collaborative process that involves developers, architects, engineers, builders, and numerous specialists within those three groups. In recent decades construction design has come to rely more and more on non-structural and non-material technologies. Developers must increasingly consider energy efficiency, lighting, acoustics, and ventilation, while also taking into account factors such as cost, durability, and environmental impact. The ultimate goal has not changed – to create a building that is safe, functional, aesthetically pleasing, sustainable, and meets the needs of its owners and occupants – but the means of achieving it has.
Modern buildings contain a vast array of technological installations, including air conditioning and air purification systems, doors, switches, heating and plumbing systems, security systems, and smart control systems. The iF DESIGN AWARD look behind the façade to select buildings that evince an advanced understanding of technological symbiosis.
