Prof. Herbert Lindinger

Herbert Lindinger (born in 1933 in Austria) founded the design office Lindinger Design in 1962. Since 1971, it has been based in Hannover. For many decades his designs have shaped the subways and trams of Stuttgart, Hannover, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Berlin. Herbert is also responsible for the overall design of city squares in Darmstadt and Heidelberg. His designs include hi fi equipment for Braun, helicopters for MBB, bus stops as well as graphics and corporate design for companies such as Olivetti, Heitkamp, Sartorius and Montblanc.

Herbert studied graphic and exhibition design in Linz before receiving his diploma at the Ulm School of Design in product design. He worked alongside Hans Gugelot and Otl Aicher until 1961 and was subsequently professor at Ulm from 1962 to 1968.

He has served as professor and director at the Institute of Industrial Design at the Leibniz University Hannover for many years. In addition to his other activities, including serving as president of the Verband Deutscher Industrie Designer, board member of the German Design Council, and board member of the iF Industrie Forum Design e.V., Herbert developed the evaluation criteria for the iF product design award in 1975, which was then used by the juries for many years. Herbert is an honorary member of iF and other design societies.

His design for the Stuttgart light rail system will be honored in December 2017 with a stamp in the series "Design from Germany".
