Rolf Fehlbaum

Vitra AGBirsfelden, Switzerland

Rolf Fehlbaum was born in1941. Studied social sciences in Freiburg/Breisgau, Munich, Bern and Basle, graduating in 1967. Was awarded a Ph.D. for a study of the "Utopian Socialism of Saint-Simon." Subsequently a co-founder of the Multiple-Verlag X-art collection. Followed this with production work in the documentary film area for the company Bavaria München. As of 1973 in charge of training and education at the Baraviran Chamber of Architects in Munich. Head of Vitra since 1977; under his management the company developed into one of the leading European furniture manufacturers. As of 1983 beagn a collection of furniture from the modern period, which led to the foundation of the Vitra Design Museums in 1989. The architects Nicholas Grimshaw, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando and Alvaro Siza were responsible for designing the Vitra company site.
