A Literacy Revolution for the Rohingya
Education program
The project addresses the educational crisis facing Rohingya children in refugee camps in Bangladesh by providing them with access to high-quality education in their own language. Children on the Edge supports more than 6,300 children in the world's largest refugee camp: Kutupalong and on the island of Bhasan Char. Since Rohingya children are not allowed to learn the national language Bengali and at the same time have to follow a Burmese curriculum that they hardly understand, this creates a major barrier to learning. The introduction and teaching of the “Hanifi” writing system - actively addresses this challenge.
In Kutapalong, the world's largest refugee camp, Rohingya children are finally learning in their own language through the 'Hanifi' script, a revolutionary shift from imposed Burmese language. Beyond education, this is the survival of a culture and a voice reclaimed and restored.
WINNER STATEMENTWe're thrilled to win the iF SOCIAL IMPACT PRIZE! This award celebrates our pioneering Hanifi literacy programme, enabling thousands of Rohingya refugee children to learn in their mother tongue. These funds will be a huge help as we expand Hanifi lessons to all our refugee classrooms in Bangladesh, ensuring meaningful education for all.
