Advancing Rural Land Rights in Liberia
Land rights education and gender equality
This project uniquely utilizes multi-lingual audio technology (AMPLIO Talking Books) to serve thousands of community members relying on forests and land for livelihoods and food security across rural Liberia, mainly low-literate women and youth, whom have historically been denied access to land and other resources. Rural communities, especially women and youth, need clear and current information on their legal land rights, which have changed considerably since 2018. Awareness and education significantly improve agricultural livelihoods, positive health outcomes, food security, sustainable land use practices, and gender equality social norms.
The Amplio Talking Books are a great solution to frequent land rights education barriers such as illiteracy and language differences. The project creates a foundation so all Liberians can protect their land claims and advocate for their rights.
WINNER STATEMENTThis award advances Landesa’s ability to secure land rights through legal awareness of the land laws in Liberia that directly impact rural women, youth, and men, and protect the natural resources upon which they rely. We are humbled and most grateful for this recognition.
