Reclaiming Identity in a Gentrified Neighbourhood

Al Barri is a community-driven project that uses accessible protest tools to amplify local voices critical of gentrification, encouraging action and creating learning spaces for the tourism sector. It highlights the role of design in the fight for social justice and the preservation of cultural identity. Al Barri promotes collaboration with residents, aiming to develop a sustainable, replicable system for neighbourhoods impacted by gentrification.

JURY STATEMENT

This project empowers local communities to fight against gentrification and the erosion of urban cultural identity by providing accessible protest tools. This is a great example of how thoughtful design can support community cooperation and cultural preservation. This highly replicable project has huge potential for social impact.

WINNER STATEMENT

We are very grateful for the recognition provided by the iF DESIGN STUDENT AWARD. We are very proud of Al Barri, which we believe gives global visibility to the importance of design in the fight for social justice and the preservation of cultural identity in gentrified communities. Truly, thank you.
