Alba - Period Detection Wipe for the Visually Impaired

Accessible Menstrual Product

People who menstruate generally rely on visual cues to know when they have got their period, but there are 86 million people in the world living with some form of visual impairment or blindness, many of whom have to resort to unconventional methods like touching, smelling, or tasting bodily fluids. Alba, our proposed intervention, is a fabric wipe that users can take to the bathroom, wipe with, receive tactile feedback that indicates the onset of their period then safely dispose of the wipe. Alba is unique in its aims to promote autonomy, equality, and dignity for menstruating individuals with visual impairments, and for its material novelty.

JURY STATEMENT

Alba addresses a clear and unmet user need of visually impaired menstruating people with an innovative design. The students' thorough design process, including empathetic user interviews and validation through a working prototype, underscores their dedication to user-centric design.

WINNER STATEMENT

We are deeply honored to receive the iF DESIGN STUDENT AWARD for our project Alba. We are grateful to the iF Design community for acknowledging the potential of our product to empower the estimated 86 million menstruating individuals worldwide who face similar challenges.
