Automated Deterrent for Elephant Crop Raiding

For Kenyan farmers, a single elephant can ruin a year’s income in hours. Current deterrents are often lethal and unreliable. AROMA is a non-harmful solution that uses a tripwire to activate an electromechanical system. It emits a 600 Hz acoustic signal that mimics an agitated beehive while dispersing chili vapor. This innovative device combines natural deterrents into one durable, low-maintenance unit, providing a reliable barrier for both farms and elephants.

JURY STATEMENT

This design represents a convincing resolution of the conflict of interests between wildlife conservation and agricultural livelihoods. The project proposes a non-harmful and practical deterrent that protects farmers while respecting the lives and ecological role of elephants. A significant step toward coexistence between humans and nonhumans.
