Bamboo Words (Qiantang) umbrella develops a localized green design for manufacture. To adapt traditional material and crafts to contemporary manufacture, the umbrella frame uses bamboo, an abundant local resource, as the main material and uses a new technique called composite bamboo technique to meet requirements of manufacture. In addition, the frame develops the structure of traditional Chinese bamboo umbrella and adapts bamboo-split craft to manufacture. The umbrella re-interprets the relation between tradition and manufacture. It explores a better relationship among green design, traditional craft, traditional culture and new material.
