BioBrew - Coffee Wastewater Treatment

Wastewater Management System

BioBrew is a low-cost wastewater treatment system designed for small coffee farms. It utilizes vermifiltration to purify wastewater and compost coffee pulp into fertilizer, thereby reducing pollution and enhancing soil health. The modular design adapts to different farm sizes, treating 500–1,000 litres in 2–3 days using locally sourced materials. Unlike chemical and purely physical treatments, it is affordable, easy to maintain, and sustainable. Field-tested in Cauca, Colombia, it enhances water quality, boosts soil fertility, and promotes eco-friendly farming practices.

JURY STATEMENT

This design exemplifies a smart and sustainable approach to coffee farming that reduces pollution, improves water quality, and supports farmers' livelihoods. Vermifiltration is a creative solution vetted by the designer. It's affordable and easy to maintain, which are critical factors for successful implementation, especially among small coffee farms in Colombia.

WINNER STATEMENT

The iF DESIGN STUDENT AWARD is a powerful validation of BioBrew: Lombriz Nadando and its mission to revolutionize the coffee industry. This award amplifies my commitment to pushing boundaries in design, innovation, and sustainability.
