BLUST
Accessible health in remote African regions
BLUST is designed to address cold chain disruptions in remote parts of Africa during epidemic outbreaks. It harnesses renewable energy and combines active and passive cooling to keep blood samples at 2–8°C in off-grid areas. Unlike existing solutions, it features a clever two-part system: a charging unit that captures and stores energy to generate cold and a transport unit that efficiently maintains the low temperatures. This design reduces weight and complexity, utilizes locally available materials and on-site production, and enhances accessibility and ease of use, thereby saving lives and preserving medical supplies in vulnerable regions.
This is a highly specific, economic, tangible, and wonderfully crafted solution that meets a genuine and pressing need in developing countries. This is life-saving design at its best.
WINNER STATEMENTWe feel incredibly grateful and honored to be recognized as 'Best of the Year' by the iF DESIGN STUDENT AWARD jury. We believe thoughtful innovation should benefit the entire planet, and winning this award inspires us to continue designing solutions that contribute to positive global impact.
