The BMW i3 stands for a new approach to premium mobility. The first large-scale production car with an all-electric engine manufactured by BMW Group is tailored to the requirements of sustainable and emission-free mobility. With its revolutionary architecture and CRP passenger compartment, the BMW i3 weighs only 1,195 kg. The design is clear and minimalist. It makes attributes such as lightness, safety and efficiency tangible while integrating functions such as the airflow to create a self-contained, pioneering esthetic appearance.

iF GOLD STATEMENT

The BMW i3 has an individual, future-oriented aesthetic and does not simply imitate examples from automotive design history. A coherent and consistent approach, especially in terms of how the concept has been developed from the inside to the outside: an intriguing interpretation of ‘form follows function’. The design has perfectly captured the values embodied by this car: lightness, safety and efficiency. As with the BMW i8, the new BMW i range will establish its own development concepts. With the BMW i3, the central focus was cost reduction for the weight-saving, carbon-fiber passenger compartment by means of the newly developed large-series production. The BMW i3 is the first entirely electrically powered large series vehicle. Its 2-cylinder internal combustion engine only serves as additional source of electricity (range extender).
