Racing wheelchair

BMW of North America

Designworks collaborated with BMW of North America and the U. S. Paralympic Track & Field team to develop a racing wheelchair customized for world-class athletes. The team immersed themselves in the sport and challenges of the athletes. The outcome: a wheelchair using aerodynamics, lightweight materials and extensive ergonomic analysis to optimize athlete performance. Taking insights from BMW’s motorsport history, we applied custom body mold processes to optimize the fit to each athlete. Three athletes took home a collective seven medals (four gold) in addition to setting four paralympic records.
