Brumadinho Memorial

Signage System

On January 25th 2019 a huge disaster involving a tailings dam containing waste from an iron ore mine and processing plant in Brumadinho (Minas Gerais/Brazil) collapsed and killed 272 people. The families of the victims created an association named AVABRUM, with the aim of pursuing claims related to the rights of those who suffered the loss of their loved ones. One of the compensations was the creation of the Memorial to honor those who lost their lives and serve as a warning of future tragedies. Architecture, Design, and Typography are employed in a project that place individuals face to face with the undeniable testament of reality.

iF Gold Statement

The Brumadinho disaster shocked Brazil and the world. This project was designed to aid the process of grieving and healing by harnessing the pain of a small mining community to create a fitting monument to those who perished in 2019. It combines signage, architecture, and typography in a way that fosters remembrance, contemplation, and awareness, and echoes the void left by those 272 missing lives.
