Caregivers in intensive care units have many challenges in caring for critically ill patients. For mechanically ventilated patients, accurately gauging nutritional needs can be fundamental to recovery. Clinically, the gold standard in measuring ‘Resting Energy Expenditure’ is indirect calorimetry, but this has been largely overlooked due to a lack of accessible technology. As a result, its importance to patient recovery has not been widely understood, with many healthcare professionals resorting to a guesstimate approach. The goal of this design was to bring this lifesaving science into common use, delivering better outcomes for patients and health workers.
