Dongziguan Affordable Housing

Architecture

The project is a new village built on the southern Yangtze River near Hangzhou, China. The brief was to design and construct high-quality, low-budget housing for relocated farmers, while maintaining their original lifestyle of collective living. The project seeks to organize the form of the buildings in the Chinese courtyard style. The function fully respects the traditional way of life of the farmers, while offering a new opportunity for rural revival by providing quality affordable housing and reacting against previous affordable housing projects in which traditional modes of communal living were not respected.

iF Gold Statement

Low-cost, affordable housing is a sensitive topic in China. The design of this housing shows respect for traditional morphology and community living in a simple and elegant architectural language. This could become a great model for villages in China!
