Vital Heat counters the effects of hypothermia after surgery (general anesthesia lowers body temperature), after trauma, overdose, or stroke. Vital Heat is comprised of a base unit, a tethered heat exchanger that goes under the palm, and a low cost disposable hand chamber. Vital Heat works by applying heat under the palm of one hand, which quickly transfers heat to the vital organs. Palms have unique vascular beds specifically for bringing large quantities of blood to the surface of the skin. The patients hand is gently sealed in a clear plastic chamber which is snapped onto the heat exchanger. A slight vacuum (1 psi) is pulled inside the chamber in order to vasodilate the patients hand, which increases blood flow. Within fifteen minutes, Vital Heat elevates body temperature back to normal.
