Echo House
Adaptive reuse project
Free echo(Beijing) Culture Communication Co., Ltd.
Echo House is a vegan café, cooking research lab, and gallery. The original building was a red brick one-story warehouse built in Beijing's spinning zone in the 1960s; it was retrofitted to create a contemporary two-story structure. Red bricks from no longer needed walls were reused for the newly built outer wall on the second floor, highlighting the area's old industrial heritage. Since one of the clients' priorities is to convey their respect for the natural environment, the designers focused on emphasizing the relationship between the inside and the outside. The door-free space can be used flexibly and makes people feel welcome, encouraging them to use it actively without restraint.
