ECMO - Adoxy

Medical device

ECMO stands for ExtraCorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, an artificial lung that provides a patient with oxygen outside of the body. Today’s equipment looks old; it’s overwhelming and a bit scary. When life or death can be decided in a matter of seconds, the equipment needs to be foolproof. In my research, I found that this is not always the case. The result is Adoxy, a compact ECMO system where the emphasis was put on simplicity, integration and a small footprint. As use of this treatment is expanding, ECMO needs to be simplified to become more popular and make the treatment more accessible to a larger number of patients and hospitals.

JURY STATEMENT

This design has a good overall look. The designer has studied the problem and come up with a feasible concept that looks practical and ergonomic.

WINNER STATEMENT

I would like to give a big thank you to everyone who contributed a helping hand, from the users sharing their expertise, the patients telling their unique stories, and the UID faculty for their tremendous support. I could not have completed this project without your positive mind-sets and willingness to help.
