Absorbing oil spill with unpurposed wool

My master’s thesis investigates the potential of Swedish waste wool as a sustainable, biodegradable solution for cleaning small-boat harbors contaminated with oil and heavy metals. Currently, plastic-based materials are used for absorption, which contributes to pollution. I developed Macro Fibers, a reusable absorbent made from recycled wool, in collaboration with wool experts. Its structure alerts marine life while effectively absorbing oil, providing a local, circular alternative.

JURY STATEMENT

This project presents a compelling circular solution for marine remediation by replacing fossil-based sorbents with discarded Swedish wool. It is an exemplary case of material research that effectively transitions from a 'waste' mindset to a restorative, biodegradable system.

I am truly grateful and honored to receive this international recognition. The iF DESIGN STUDENT AWARD gives the project greater visibility and opens valuable opportunities for future collaborations, continued research, and further development within sustainable design and marine innovation.
