Rapid home build system buildable by volunteers

Epic Homes focuses on providing safe shelter for the Orang Asli people, the indigenous people of Malaysia. There are 12,000 Orang Asli families that do not have access to safe homes. The movement aims to build relationships between urban and rural people through the act of building homes. This enables development of support systems to support and empower Orang Asli to overcome adversity and achieve aspirations. They do not just receive a home, but are empowered to dream as well as to be changemakers in their own communities. It takes 3 days to build and complete a home by trained volunteers.

JURY STATEMENT

EPIC Homes not only provides well-needed shelter, but has developed a thoughtful process to connect local volunteers with Indigenous people in Malaysia. Importantly, recipients of a new home have agency in the building process and continue to stay engaged beyond its completion.

WINNER STATEMENT

Epic Homes is honored and humbled to be selected as one of the winners of the iF Social Impact Prize. This will enable us to continue our work with the indigenous people in Malaysia and urban volunteers, bridging the urban and rural divide through the act of building homes. Ultimately, empowering them to be changemakers in their own communities.
