Clean Water From Sand Dams

Excellent Development and our partner in southeast Kenya, the Africa Sand Dam Foundation, have been supporting thousands of people living in rural southeast Kenya since 2010 to build sand dams and develop climate-smart agriculture, which will provide them with lifelong access to clean water and food. A sand dam is a reinforced concrete wall built across a seasonal sandy river that can capture up to 40 million litres of water during the rainy season (enough to provide over 1,000 people with year-round access to clean water). This water is stored safely within sand behind the dam walls and protected from evaporation, contamination and disease.
