Airport Environmental Design

SEMBA renewed Fukuoka Airport under the concept of creating a destination filled with surprise and emotion—an airport that becomes a tourist attraction itself. Opened in 1999, it faced congestion and limited services as passenger numbers grew 2.9 times by 2018. The renovation turned the once sterile, narrow space into a memorable gateway: the first encounter with Japan and the final impression of travel. Using traditional crafts and designs inspired by Fukuoka’s streetscapes, food stalls, and festival floats, we created a dynamic space celebrating local culture and seasons, transforming the airport into a new cultural and economic landmark.
