Jewels of the Sea
Interactive Installation
Every fourth breath we take is sponsored by diatoms since these photosynthetic unicellular algae produce about one-fourth of the world's oxygen. Although these organisms are incredibly important for our carbon cycle, few people are familiar with them. The reason for their general unfamiliarity is probably their microscopic size. This project draws attention to an organism we can't see with our eyes, fusing scientific knowledge about its geometric forms with playful digital interaction with real diatoms.
"Beautifully crafted installation, providing information in an exciting and elegant way through a highly creative use of technology."
WINNER STATEMENTI'm more than happy to receive this prestigious award. And what I also love about it, is the fact that it yet again draws some attention to essential microorganisms, which are way too often overseen due to their size.
