Juntos

Typographic Design

Juntos is a project developed with 7-8 year old students of the Otávio Rosa school in Novo Hamburgo/Brazil. The aim was to collectively develop a typeface and show that, despite their differences as a group, the students could create something bigger together. By overlapping the writing of each one of the students, we created a single font, called ‘Juntos’, which means ‘together’ in Portuguese. We used the font to create posters that were displayed around the school. We also encouraged the students to reflect on the group work and on their group identity by using design as a tool of change, both in school and in their own social context.

JURY STATEMENT

It’s a wonderful idea to have schoolchildren write the alphabet together. This taught the children more about design and communicated a feeling of belonging to them, which is also reflected in the translation of the Portuguese word ‘Juntos’: Together!

WINNER STATEMENT

First of all, it’s a great honor for us to be among the winners in the great iF STUDENT DESIGN AWARD 2016, which has been a reference for us so many times before. We’re so glad and this is one more reason why we won’t let this project end; instead, we wish to continue this great work and turn it into an educational tool which will be available for as many children as we can reach. And lastly, we’d like to thank each single one of the 17 amazing children who made all of this possible; we thank our teacher and our university for all the support; we thank the iF Design jurors for believing in us and we thank our families and friends for all the love.
