Kawara Bench

a series of sitting furniture

Whenever Kawara, Japanese roof tiles, are cracked or chipped during production, which frequently happens, they are simply discarded at the nearest landfill; this translates as more than 65,000 pieces per year. However, these rejects still have unique value as reflected in their colors, texture, durability and the smooth curve, which invites people to sit down and relax. By cutting off only the damaged part and mounting them inside a wooden structure, the “useless rejects” can be transformed into something “useful” once again.

JURY STATEMENT

"Recycled material or upcycle material is a great way of thinking sustainability in design. There is so much material discarded everyday in factories around the world and it is a massive waste. By incorporating otherwise wasted pieces in beautiful design like in this project it is a perfect way of upcyling materials. It almost adds to it. The design has a high aesthetic level, is thoroughly thought out and would have great commercial potential for the contract market."

WINNER STATEMENT

Compliments from regular design fans make me smile a lot, but sometimes it's not enough. Being awarded with an iF concept design award means that I will have even more opportunities to expose and explain my work to people all over the world.
