Retail interior design

The dominant Japanese drugstore brand Matsukiyo (founded 1932 with 1,680 stores and 576 billion yen in revenue) realized that public excitement had moved from its shabby market-style roadsides to boutique competitors in upscale areas. They turned the company’s Ikebukuro store into an eye-popping multimedia experience that repositions the chain as unconventional, daring, and forward-thinking, shaking up ingrained notions of what this retail sector can be, and changed the way customers interact with their essential domestic purchases. The result is a brand with confidence and verve, and one whose stance on social issues is back at the heart of everyday Japanese life.
