Material-Conscious Design

Matterness rethinks our relationship with materials amid the ecological crisis, challenging the view of matter as a passive resource. It comprises an editorial essay on material lifecycles and a digital platform serving as an open archive for biomaterial projects in science, design, and art. Grounded in varied research, Matterness promotes critical thinking and evolves collectively over time.

JURY STATEMENT

Matterness artistically reflects on material and our relationship with the built environment. It's the starting point of every design, and these materials are here to stay, before and after us. This incites a profound reflection that every designer should have.

WINNER STATEMENT

Matterness began with observation and curiosity about the surroundings. Receiving this award feels like proof that a project built on listening (to materials, to thinkers, to the world) can also be heard, and a reminder that questions can carry as much meaning as answers. I am deeply honored!
