I considered how civil engineering structures can mimic nature and how such landscapes, with people present, can become communal spaces. I am applying the concepts of "ground" and "figure" from Gestalt psychology to design. The "figure'', which is an internal space with a function, and the "ground'', which is an open space. I shaped the 'ground' space to mimic natural topography by recessing the volume in three dimensions. In contrast, the “figure” volumes such as the gallery, toilet, and office were placed behind the stepped “ground” space.
