Today, almost 1.3 billion people - nearly 1 in 5 people on the planet - do not have access to modern energy. Almost all of them live in poverty in rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa and developing Asia, without connection to public service networks. In addition, many conflicts push populations beyond their borders and end up in humanitarian camps. The UNHCR has chosen this simple, reliable and sustainable means to allow these populations to keep in touch (telephone recharge) and provide lighting.
