Portable Desk & Chair

This is a multi-functional backpack design that opens into a padded stool and board to press on while writing. This aims to improve the everyday problem where many children lack basic facilities such as chairs and tables at school and at home, while still having to walk long distances between the two. This is especially prevalent in developing nations. The backpack is easy to transport and transforms into a chair that is easily flat-packed and assembled without needing any screws. This improves the learning environment and gives children a sense of ownership, with knock-on effects in every other area of their learning.

JURY STATEMENT

Based on a very matter-of-fact analysis of the school furniture situation in Africa, this student has created a very simple, lightweight, multifunctional stool, which impressed the jury. The choice of materials and details might be varied in a professional design process, but the idea is great.

WINNER STATEMENT

Beatific. I was beaming with excitement and went hop-skipping down the corridor with the hugest smile. What a privilege to represent South Africa on a global scale, where there is such opportunity for positive change through design.
