New Zealand Opera

Brand

The New Zealand Opera is the country’s national opera company. The rebrand was lead by a new logo mark built around the idea of musical notation placed on a five-line stave. Rather than a small sign-off, the mark projects the brand unapologetically, referencing mastheads seen in fashion publications. The themes behind Madame Butterfly of love, honor and betrayal are combined to tell a story in a single image. The Japanese flag has been combined with traditional geisha makeup of red and white. Blood drips as she performs Jigai in the final act, taking her life, leaving her hairpiece white as a ghost.
