Prism

Installation design

The Prism installation was created at the SENSE ISLAND art event on Sarushima Island in Tokyo Bay, Japan, which was a military base until after World War II. The idea was to revive memories of the island's past with beautiful, colorful lighting that resembles a nighttime cityscape. The aim was neither to glamorize war nor Japan’s history, but rather to revive the memories that remain on the island in an aesthetic, engaging experience. Design and art have an important role to play in keeping the memories of the past alive lest we forget the lessons we can learn from our history.

iF Gold Statement

Prism is actually an unspectacular installation (during the day). At night, however, the spectacular impact of this project has the possibility to revitalize a forgotten island. A beacon in a sea of memories, a sensual art installation with light and prisms: this installation is worth taking a ferry to Sarushima to see – and worthy of an iF gold award.
