Graduating from a hut

Tarayana has been working in rural development for the past 16 years. During this period, the local needs of the communities were discussed, problem trees jointly analyzed, solutions soul searched and implemented by the communities with us taking a facilitation role. However,we noticed that the nerve point of rural development was still eluding us and that the processes were still tedious with us mediating, nudging and edging the communities along the planned activities that they had drawn up themselves. It took all of our patience, forbearance and greatest commitment to move along at their chosen pace, rather than imposing our ideas and pace

JURY STATEMENT

This community-based project is focused on the skills development of the rural people of Bhutan. It targets housing and initiates natural farming program to improve food and nutrition security in the rural regions. The program helps the villagers build better homes by providing, for example, construction materials free of cost. This also enables the people to maintain better hygiene – which means less illness in both the community and individual families.

WINNER STATEMENT

Tarayana Foundation is elated and honored to receive the iF Social Impact Prize 2021. With this prize, the foundation aspires to continue our initiative towards empowering social and economic aspects of the rural communities in need, especially towards our Housing Improvement Programme whereby providing basic human needs and enabling vulnerable families to live a quality life. Through support like this, we remain confident towards achieving our mission of a happy and prosperous Bhutan.
