Protecting Afghan Girls from Gender Apartheid
Covert Education and Family Support Program
The Taliban prohibit girls in Afghanistan from attending school past 6th grade. TYTW provides alternative education for thousands of Afghan girls (ages 11-18) in several provinces, ensuring the safety and security of our students. Classes are held in the homes of credentialed, previous female teachers who have lost their livelihoods due to school closures. In some areas, we collaborate with religious schools that covertly teach a secular core curriculum, and primary schools that covertly teach secondary-age girls. TYTW also supports the girls' families with nutrition, livelihood programming, and sensitization.
This is a profoundly bold project. These girls deserve global visibility for their struggle to spark urgent change, and reclaim their identities to grow as powerful, free women. I hope the project achieves its ambitious goals, even if progress comes in small steps.
