SCOOT: Open Source Power Assist

Improving Mobility for Wheelchair Users

One of the most popular and common accessories for manual wheelchairs is power assist, which essentially turns a manual wheelchair into a powered one. SCOOT is a user-first design built for affordability, safety, and easy maintenance. This system utilizes widely available electric scooter parts and tool batteries, allowing for quick and low-cost repairs. Its modular system allows users or any scooter shop to replace key components. Additionally, the “safe-stop” feature prevents potentially hazardous malfunctions. SCOOT is accessible, repairable, and designed for real-world use.

JURY STATEMENT

This design solution enhances the accessibility of electromobility for people with disabilities. It means that a wheelchair power assist system is accessible to everyone. Democratic design in action.

WINNER STATEMENT

SCOOT strives to enhance accessibility for wheelchair users worldwide, and we are grateful for the recognition of our efforts with this iF DESIGN STUDENT AWARD. Recognition like this helps move us closer to making a more inclusive future a reality.
