Advances in technology have led to improvements in the functional value of smartphones, but the emotional value that has users wanting to own them hasn’t been factored in, so we chose to reexamine smartphones with a view to this. We designed a smartphone that had a presence in peoples’ lives similar to that of their favorite item of clothing or their daily planner. The contrast between straight lines and free-form curves, and a layout where vertical and horizontal lines are consciously unaligned afford a sublime discordance that is nevertheless endearing. The latest model in the AQUOS wish series is more environmentally friendly.
