Shodaiji Columbarium

Columbarium

To mark its 1200th anniversary, Shodaiji Temple in Tokyo commissioned upsetters architects to design a new columbarium. The project preserves the original shelf-type structure while adding a prayer space that redefines the bond between the departed and the living. At its core is a custom glass piece that balances transparency and depth as a spiritual symbol. The fan-shaped layout gently guides the gaze toward this element. Carefully arranged wooden details and minimal furnishings create a calm atmosphere. Gradual, programmed lighting enhances reflection. Tradition and quiet innovation merge in this meditative, personal space.
