SkinScan

Home Medical Device

Skin cancer is the world number one cancer type. 1 out of 5 people will suffer from it during their lifetime. A doctor can detect skin cancer by optical inspection, but people tend to skip the yearly screening because of costs and effort. SkinScan is a device for a quick and easy skin cancer home inspection. The earlier the cancer is detected, the higher are the chances to survive. The check is done by visual inspection first. A 3D scanner detects cancerous melanomas by checking visual criteria. If a suspicious area is detected it is checked by electrical impedance spectroscopy, a method to check skin tissue structure.

JURY STATEMENT

SkinScan is a well-designed device for an easy skin cancer home inspection. The earlier the cancer is detected, the higher are the chances to survive.

WINNER STATEMENT

I was very happy to hear that my concept SkinScan, which was developed in cooperation with PHILIPS, has won an iF STUDENT DESIGN AWARD 2016. The project tackles an area that is of special importance to me personally: cancer prevention. As I am myself a skin type that needs to pay special attention to that kind of disease, I wanted to create a solution to empower people to perform cancer prevention checks themselves. The earlier skin cancer is detected, the higher are the chances to survive, so it’s all about prevention. I am glad that the iF jury also sees it that way - Thank you very much!
